Privacy policy
Essay Notebook helps you write essays in your own voice. Your writing is personal, so this page says plainly what we keep, why, and what you can do about it.
What we keep
- Your account: email address, first name if you give one, grade level, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your password. We never see or store your actual password.
- Your writing: essay prompts, rubrics, plans, drafts, your edits, writing samples, sources you paste, and your answers to the coach's questions.
- Your writing style profile, built from the writing you share and the edits you make.
- Usage numbers: how many essays you start each month and how much the coach is used (counts only, not your text). We use these to run plan limits and keep costs under control.
- For security, we briefly keep the internet address of requests to limit spam and password guessing. These records are deleted after about two days.
How we use it
- To coach you: plan your essay, draft paragraphs with you, and learn how you write.
- To keep the service working and fair, like enforcing monthly limits.
We do not sell your information, show you ads, or share your writing with your school, teachers, or anyone else.
The AI that helps draft
To draft and give suggestions, the parts of your essay the coach needs are sent to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI model. Anthropic's terms for its API say it does not use this data to train its models. Nothing else about you, like your email, is sent with it.
Cookies
We use one cookie to keep you logged in. No tracking or advertising cookies.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your account and writing until you delete them. You can delete a single essay at any time, or delete your whole account in Settings. Deleting your account permanently removes your essays, drafts, writing samples, styles, and usage history. It cannot be undone.
Age
Essay Notebook is for people 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has made an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Passwords are hashed, connections are encrypted, and every request checks that you can only see your own essays. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your writing safe.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and tell you in the app.
